Bored pile reinforcement: structure and production features

In Europe, the technologies of pile manufacture in the ground — bored and augercast — have long been known, but in Russia, they have been actively used only since the early 90s. Bored piles, as opposed to precast concrete ones, have a more gentle impact on the development and allow avoiding numerous accidents and damage to adjacent buildings that may occur during the driving of traditional reinforced concrete piles.

The technology of bored piles involves manufacturing them directly in the ground.

A well is drilled for each pile, afterwards a reinforcement cage is installed inside and filled with concrete mix. In this way:


1. Building density is increased due to a higher safety level of construction works.
2. Noise levels are reduced, allowing performing construction even in residential urban or suburban areas.
3. Durability and durability increase due to design features of bored (augercast) piles.

Both flat slab cages and space frames can be used to reinforce pile foundations. However, circular pile reinforcements are the most common.

Circular pile reinforcements consist of:

• a system of vertical rebars arranged in a circle (from 3 to 32, depending on the diameter of the finished structure);
• a horizontal ring-shaped rebar that fastens the structure securely;
• in some cases, three horizontal bars forming a triangular section inside in order to increase the rigidity of the reinforcement supplement the rebar.

Reinforcing elements of two types are used for the production of cages:

In some cases, longitudinal rods are coiled at the final production phase throughout the length of a metal construction or near the rings in order to improve frame stiffness.
